Civic mission and public engagement

A young girl learns about the brain

We put our communities at the heart of everything we do. It’s what we call our civic mission.

We have been responding to major challenges faced by society and undertaking work for the public good for well over 130 years. We are committed to improving the health, wealth and wellbeing of the communities we serve, and take seriously our role to promote environmental sustainability and diversity.

Public engagement includes every aspect of our work: our teaching, our research, and the wider contribution we make to society. We do this by working with members of the public to help shape, carry out, and share our work with the goal of opening public dialogue and generating mutual benefit.

Our ambition

Visit our community pages to find out more about our exciting community-led projects, building Wales’ skills for the future, and catalysing Wales’ green recovery, and learn how we’re using our research and expertise to benefit our diverse local, national and global communities.

Cardiff University is the first and only Welsh university to receive the prestigious Silver Engage Watermark from the NCCPE. The award recognises our strong commitment to civic engagement and reflects how public and community engagement are at the core of how we deliver our civic responsibilities.

Our aim is to be recognised locally, nationally and internationally for our collaborative and inclusive civic mission and public engagement practice.

Community

We’re working alongside our communities to help Wales build back fairer from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Building Wales' skills for the future

As Wales’ biggest university, we are supporting a skills-led recovery from the pandemic.

Leading Wales' green recovery

We're helping to create a sustainable future by building on the ways people are reconnecting with nature and our planet.
